Dean Caldwell Strother (1908-2000) was born in Winfield, Kansas, and attended local schools before receiving a Congressional appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He would graduate in 1931, and immediately attend primary and advanced flight schools at Randolph and Kelly Fields, Texas. He received his pilot wings at Kelly in October, 1932. Frederick LeRoy Martin (b. Nov. 26, 1882, Liberty, Ind.-d. Feb. 23, 1954), U.S. Air Force officer, was commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps after graduating from university in 1908. He transferred to the Air Service in 1920 after serving as director of military aeronautics. He was commanding general of the 3rd Wing, GHQ Air Force (1937-1940), of Hawaiian Air Force, of the Second Air Force, and of the Army Air Force Central Technical Training Command. He retired in 1944.
